Anorthosis joined AEK Larnaca at the top of the league standings on Sunday after a narrow 1-0 victory over Famagusta rivals Nea Salamina while Omonia’s problems went from bad to worse after they were held to a 1-1 draw at bottom of the table Doxa Katokopia.
Meanwhile APOEL, who are in action on Monday night against Ayia Napa, could join Anorthosis and AEK in first position with a victory over the relegation strugglers.
Ronny Levy’s Anorthosis continued their winning run in the league courtesy of a second half penalty from Juliano Spadacio. Salamina officials were furious when referee Marios Panayi pointed to the spot after Ricardo Laborde went tumbling in the area on 64 minutes.
Omonia suffered a crushing blow in their bid to revive their title hopes under new boss Toni Savevski. The Nicosia Greens needed 70 minutes to break the resistance of Doxa at the Ammochostos Stadium after Andre Alves slotted home a penalty but Loucas Hadjiloucas’ Doxa – who were reduced to ten men in the second half – snatched a penalty in stoppage time following Ricardo Fernandes deflected shot.
Champions AEL warmed up for their Europa League tie against Fenerbahce this Thursday with a 1-1 draw at home to Ethnikos Achnas. Dosa Junior had given Jorge Costa’s side the lead with a header just before halftime but Marco Paixao levelled matters on the hour to pick up a priceless point for the visitors.
The Limassol club remain in fourth position but are six points adrift of league leaders Anorthosis and AEK.
Apollon’s impressive form of late continued as they beat Alki 3-1 in Larnaca. Ivan Parlov and Sebastian Setti had given the Limassol club a 2-0 lead in the first half and while Arnal’s goal on 82 minutes breathed threatened a late rally, Spanish striker Roberto put the game beyond doubt with his shot deep into stoppage time.
Elsewhere, Olympiakos secured an impressive 2-1 win at Enosis Neon Paralimniou. Henrique and Pieros Sotiriou struck early in the first half to give the visitors the lead.
Shaibu Yakubu reduced the deficit before halftime but Olympiakos held on to take all three points.
