Turkish Cypriot newspapers continue referring to AEL – Fenerbahce football match
Under the title “Feel comfortable”, Turkish Cypriot daily Kibris newspaper (23.10.12) reports that 29 Turkish Cypriot journalists and 12 Greek Cypriot journalists attended yesterday the press conference organized in Limassol by AEL football club prior to their team’s game with Turkish Fenerbahce, within the framework of UEFA Europa League.
The paper writes that AEL’s President, Andreas Sofokleous noted that they will keep this match far from politics and racism. Pointing out that they will not allow any incidents to happen, Sofokleous said that AEL supporters are aware of this and added that they have taken measures to prevent supporters of other clubs to cause any provocations. According to the paper, Sofokleous noted that flags of the Republic of Turkey could be carried to the stadium.
AEL’s Turkish Cypriot former player, Sevim Ebeoglu was also present at the press conference.
Turkish Cypriot daily Havadis newspaper (23.10.12) refers to the issue under the title “Flags will enter and it will be safe”, and reports that security was on the agenda of the press conference. The paper writes that the administrators of AEL said that security will be at the highest level and that people who have no ticket will not be allowed to approach the stadium to a distance of 300 meters. They also noted that they will take with them to Istanbul their former player Sevim Ebeoglu “as ambassador of peace”.
Other Turkish Cypriot newspapers refer to the issue under the following titles:
Yeni Duzen: “’Let the [game] be played in peace’”
Haberdar: “AEL hosted us”
Afrika: “We must show how we could live peacefully”
Halkin Sesi: “’Let us give a message of peace’”
Vatan: “The security measures are completed”
Volkan: “Our flag will enter that stadium”. The paper refers to statements made by the vice president of Fenerbahce’s second supporters’ association in the occupied area of Cyprus, Ali Cansu, who said that if flags of Greece and the Republic of Cyprus are opened in the stadium they will also open their own flags.
