Marcos Baghdatis’ run at the Shanghai Masters came to an end on Thursday after losing in straight sets to France’s Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
Baghdatis had shown plenty of grit in the tournament dispatching Italy’s Fabio Fognini and Canada’s Milos Raonic in the opening two rounds before finally succumbing to a 6-2, 7-6(2) defeat to the fifth-seeded Frenchman in 82 minutes.
Tsonga hit 11 aces and converted five of his six break point opportunities for his 50th match win of the season (50-18 overall). The Cypriot tennis star, who hit six aces and won 51 per cent of his service points, is trying to finish in the Top 50 of the ATP Rankings for the sixth time in seven years. He is currently ranked 36th in the world.
