A 36 year old Asian woman who police say was in Cyprus illegally, was killed when she fell from the fifth floor of an apartment block as she was trying to flee police checks.
The incident happened around 3.30 am on Sunday. The woman had tied sheets together to attempt to escape from the balcony of the building. A second person managed to climb down from the fifth to the fourth floor using a sheet and get away.
Police had come to the flat after receiving a complaint from neighbours that there was a disturbance. A police spokesman said that when they arrived there seemed to be a party underway with a number of foreigners from an Asian country. He said that as police started checking documents they heard a noise at the back of the flat and saw that a woman had fallen on to the balcony of the first floor having apparently tied a sheet on to the balcony railing in her attempt to climb down. He said that the woman had apparently lost her balance, fallen some 13 metres and died instantly.
The exact cause of death will be determined at a post mortem. Police said that the woman came from an Asian country and was living in Cyprus illegally.
