Theodoros Theophanous, a 30 year old hair dresser,  was jailed for life on Wednesday after being found guilty of murdering his former girlfriend Julia Oporok, 24 and her three year old daughter Victoria. The decision,  handed down by Paphos criminal court on Wednesday afternoon, was unanimous. The three judge bench found the accused guilty for the double murder committed  in December last year. The bodies of the two victims had been found at Yeroskipou beach. The woman, who was four months pregnant, had been shot and the toddler asphyxiated.  
The court jailed Theophanous  for life for the premeditated murder of his former girlfriend and 35 years for the manslaughter of the child. He was also jailed ten years for possession of a fire arm and ten years for possession of explosives. The sentences will run concurrently.
The criminal court said that Theophanous had acted out of pathological jealousy but also because of financial difficulties. Theophanous was said to have borrowed huge sums from loan sharks and was said to have been enraged when the victim refused to lend him 300,000 euros.
On hearing the sentence, relatives of the victims applauded while relatives of the convicted man broke down in tears. His mother fainted and was given first aid.
