Turkish Cypriot Cyprus Today newspaper (08.09.12, weekend) published statements by Wayne Smith, one of the men named in a UK list of most-wanted criminals on the run and reports that 38 year old Smith vowed to hand himself in.
The paper published a picture of the house where Wayne Smith and his girlfriend Julie Skelding are living in occupied Lapithos village. “I want the truth to be told. I’ll be back in the UK in the near future”, said Smith in an exclusive interview with Cyprus Today. According to the paper, Smith was convicted at Birmingham Crown Court of causing death by dangerous driving and preventing the course of justice in relation to a hit-and-run incident.
The paper writes that the British High Commission had a secret meeting with top “police officers” from the “TRNC”, breakaway regime in the occupied area of Cyprus, to discuss bringing runaways before justice.
Moreover, the paper reports that drug smuggler and suspected ostrich farm fraudster Martin Evans, 50, who is also wanted in the UK, may also be living in occupied Lapithos.
