The drama of deadline day will give way to what promises to be a thrilling weekend of Premier League action, with Liverpool facing Arsenal and Manchester United travelling to Southampton on Super Sunday.

Elsewhere, Manchester City take on Queens Park Rangers at the Etihad Stadium in a repeat of the match which provided the final title twist of last season, while Swansea City and Everton will hope to extend 100 per cent winning records.

Neither Liverpool nor Arsenal have managed a league victory yet this season but with all the speculation of the transfer window at an end Sunday’s clash between the sides, which can be seen live on Sky Sports 1HD, represents something of a fresh start. Brendan Rodgers will have taken positives from his side’s 2-2 draw with Manchester City last weekend and it will be intriguing to see how his new-look team match up against Arsenal, who have always earned praise for their style but who have so far played out two goalless draws as they adjust to life without Robin van Persie.

Van Persie is likely to get another chance to show Arsenal what they are missing in Sunday’s second live match on Sky Sports 1HD, which pits Manchester United against newly-promoted Southampton. Wayne Rooney will be sidelined for some time with a nasty leg injury but, judging by the performance of his new Dutch team-mate against Fulham last weekend, the Red Devils will cope with his absence. Southampton acquitted themselves well against Manchester City on the opening weekend but slipped to defeat at home by Wigan last time out and will be determined to pick up their first points of the campaign.

Aston Villa are the only other team to have lost their opening two games and face a tough challenge in Sunday’s third match when they travel to Newcastle United. The Magpies were beaten by Chelsea 48 hours after travelling to Greece last week but have an extra day to prepare for this one following the home leg of their Europa League tie. They will be confident of picking up a victory to propel them up the table against a Villa side that at least managed to boost morale by defeating Tranmere Rovers in the Capital One Cup.

Impressed

Fulham suffered a shock Capital One Cup loss at the hands of Sheffield Wednesday and will be looking to bounce back when they visit West Ham United in Saturday’s early-kick, which can be seen live on Sky Sports 2HD. Martin Jol’s men have impressed in the Premier League this term but their away form has traditionally been an Achilles heel and Sam Allardyce will be demanding an improved display from his Hammers following a defeat by Swansea at the Liberty Stadium.

Memories of the last time Manchester City welcomed Queens Park Rangers to the Etihad Stadium will still be fresh in the mind when the teams renew their rivalry on Saturday. Roberto Mancini’s champions have had two tricky games so far this season and the defence is a particular concern after conceding four goals, but former City manager Mark Hughes has bigger worries following a disappointing start for QPR and will be looking for signs of encouragement from his revamped side.

Chelsea had the chance to play Reading earlier in the season due to Friday’s UEFA Super Cup and Swansea City could now go to the top of the table by beating Sunderland. Michael Laudrup’s team have scored eight times without reply in a sensational start and will be looking to keep their winning run going against the Black Cats, whose game against Reading last weekend was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

Burst into life

Everton are the only team apart from Swansea and Chelsea with maximum points, having followed up their victory over Manchester United with a win at Villa. Next up for David Moyes’ men is a journey to The Hawthorns to take on a West Bromwich Albion side that is also unbeaten after seeing off Liverpool and then snatching a late equaliser against Tottenham Hotspur.

Tottenham have been predictably busy during the final few days of the transfer window and, having burst into life after the end of August 12 months ago, will be hoping for something similar this time around following an underwhelming start to life under Andre Villas-Boas. Norwich City are the opponents at White Hart Lane on Saturday and Chris Hughton is another new manager who could do with an upturn in results, having been thumped by Fulham and drawn with QPR.

Wigan Athletic recovered from a loss to Chelsea by beating Southampton last Saturday and then cruised past Nottingham Forest in the Capital One Cup in midweek. Roberto Martinez’s men next entertain Stoke City, who were shocked by Swindon Town on Tuesday and are still looking for their first win of the season following draws with Reading and Arsenal.
