Ethnic tensions were high in Limassol last night after Turkish-Cypriot and Kurdish residents of the coastal city clashed over an apparent kidnapping.
According to police spokesman Andreas Aggelidis, the clashes began after Turkish Cypriots went to the Theofilos Georgiadis clubhouse in Limassol to demand an explanation from Kurds who they accused of kidnapping a 16 year old Turkish Cypriot girl.
A Kurdish man and the 16 year old girl’s mother were injured in the clashes.
Five hours after the incident, a fire broke out in the car of the 16 year old girls brother, with police treating the two incidents as related.
Police are investigating the kidnapping claims and have issued an arrest warrant for a young Kurdish man believed to be connected to the case.
