London Cypriot Chris Evangelou went down to a poor refereeing decision at Alexandra Palace last night Saturday in the final bout of the Tony Bellew v Edison Miranda card, spoiling his first big televised contest live on Sky Sports in front of a 4,000 crowd.
The Enfield fighter was guilty, if anything, of trying to blow out Connor with one big shot for the majority of the contest, but undoubtedly had the better of what turned out to be the most entertaining fight of the night.
How the referee came up with a 98-94 against Evangelou in the vacant Southern Area light-welterweight match-up is a mystery to me and was greeted with warranted boos around the London venue as he dropped his first loss in ten.
Connor and Evangelou, both 26, may now be brought together for a rematch after sharing ten exciting rounds, with the new champion declaring himself more than willing to face ‘The Flash’ for a second time and rightly so.
In the other contests Tony Bellew beat Edison Miranda in a WBC International Light heavyweight Championship. Lee Purdy beat Gumersindo Carrasco in the IBF International Welterweight Championship.
