A high ranking Cypriot delegation is in Israel to discuss the possibility of transferring to Cyprus natural gas from Israeli deposits as an interim solution, prior to exploitation of reserves found in Cyprus’ exclusive economic zone.

“Cypriot officials are visiting Israel to discuss with Israeli officials the possibility of transferring to Cyprus natural gas from Israel’s reserves, as an interim solution, until Cyprus is in a position to exploit its own natural gas reserves,” Commerce, Industry and Tourism Minister Neoklis Sylikiotis said here today.

Sylikiotis noted that the visit takes place after a decision taken jointly with his Israeli counterpart, during Sylikiotis’ last visit to Israel in July.

The Cypriot delegation comprises the Director of the Energy Service at the Commerce Ministry, the Chairman of the Natural Gas Public Company (DEFA), the Director General of the Cyprus Electricity Authority (EAC) and a representative of the Cyprus Energy Regulatory Authority (CERA).

The Minister said DEFA and EAC are preparing the documents for issuing a call for tenders to import natural gas to the island, the soonest possible.

He also referred further to a letter he sent to his counterparts in Israel and Greece for a joint meeting to discuss energy infrastructure.

The meeting is set to establish working groups which will study energy related issues on infrastructure, the Minister explained, adding that the meeting will probably take place in the coming weeks.
