OXHEY JETS 0 HARINGEY BOROUGH 8
Tuesday 11th September 2012 – SpartanSouth Midlands League – Premier Division
This extraordinary result never looked to be in prospect at the interval even though Borough were then two up away to the team lying second in the table. The first 40 minutes had seen both sides playing attractive end to end football with few clear cut chances. The nearest the Jets had come to scoring was a long shot which bounced to safety off the top of the bar. At the heart of the Borough defence Lewis Laws and Joseph O’Cearuill were always in command. After 40 minutes Darrell Cox started the rout as he turned quickly in the area to slam home a low ten yard shot and five minutes later Richard Worrell powered home a bullet header as he met a free kick from close to the right corner flag at the near post. Borough took control after the interval but it was not until the 61st minute that the floodgates opened when Roland Namquita bundled home a deep cross at the far post as he raced in from the left. With Oxhey now reeling and unable to cope with the speedy Borough attack and slick passing, substitute Chris Benjamin put the result beyond doubt with a close range nod into the net four minutes later and at further intervals of two minutes Worrell and Namquita each double their personal tallies to bring the total to six. It was not until the 80th minute that Borough found the net again when Benjamin secured his second with a close range finish. Finally, Demetri Stratis, normally a left back but on as a substitute on the right wing, found himself with plenty of time and space to curl his shot into the far top corner from the edge of the penalty area. Worrell then had a penalty well saved after Benjamin had been brought down by ‘keeper Sam Styles who may have been fortunate to escape with a yellow. Sadly, Borough’s evening was somewhat spoiled by the late dismissal of Laws who received no such leniency, after pushing away an opponent following a minor contretemps. The score equalled Borough’s previous best League result and they now lie 6th in the table with 13 points from 8 games some 6 points behind leaders Dunstable Town who have played a game less.
