The 15 inch pipe burst onto the A10 at 4am between the junctions with Seven Sisters Road and St Ann’s Road, filling the street with water which, in places, was up to eight inches deep.

Firefighters arrived on the scene not long after the water began to gush into the road and surrounding streets, but were unable to do anything to stem the tide until Thames Water arrived on the scene.

They managed to shut the water off just before 6am, but the disruption caused has continued into the morning with the dual carriageway closed in both directions.

But while there is some suggestion repairs could take days, Thames Water hope to have at least on side of the A10 open later today.

A spokesman said: “We have turned off water in the broken pipe and the water that flooded the carriageway has drained away. We’re hoping to get at least one side of the dual carriageway open at some point today while we get the broken section of pipe replaced. We’re really sorry for the disruption this is causing.”
