Partition is not the future of Cyprus, said Director of the President’s office Christos Christofides in a speech at a memorial service of Yiannakis Taliotis, a Greek Cypriot killed during the fights at Kokkina and Pachyamos villages in August 1964, when Turkey’s air force bombed the National Guard and Greek villages and threatened to invade, following hostilities between armed civilians from Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot community.
Saying that Cypriot President Christofias has sincerely made every effort to find a desired solution for Cyprus which has been divided since 1974 after a Turkish invasion, Christofides added that the goal of the transformation of Cyprus into a federal, bicommunal, bizonal state with guaranteed human rights of all citizens, as defined in UN resolutions was not achieved.
“The effort has failed because of the intransigent, partitionist stance of Mr. Eroglu and Ankara while the latter displays an arrogant attitude which is expressed both by threats against Cyprus and against the EU,” he said.
He added that the withdrawal of the Turkish Cypriot side from the negotiating table on the pretext of taking over the Presidency of the EU Council by the Republic of Cyprus was the culmination of the arrogance of Turkey.
Christofides said that Turkish stance should not be accepted by the International Community and it has to be denounced.
Referring to the economic crisis in Europe and Cyprus, he pointed out that the correct way to deal with it is the path of growth and social cohesion, the tidying up of public finances, and the fair sharing of burdens.
