It was good night for Cyprus’ representatives in the Europa League on Thursday with APOEL and Anorthosis muscling out wins while Omonia secured a worthy 0-0 draw away to Red Star Belgrade.
The results capped off a good week for Cypriot football following AEL 1-0 victory over Partizan in the first leg of their Champions League qualifier although there is still very much to play for when the second legs return tonight Thursday.
Omonia are patting each other on the back as they left Belgrade with a creditable 0-0 draw against Serbian hosts Red Star.
Neophytos Larkou’s new-look side kept their composure against a Red Star team – a mere shadow of the once great Belgrade club of the early nineties – but will need to win their game in Nicosia next week regardless.
The Serbian side – who were eliminated at the same stage of the competition back in 2008 by APOEL – finished the game with ten men after Marko Vesovic was shown a second yellow card in stoppage time.
Ivan Jovanovic’s APOEL were made to sweat at home to Norwegian side Aalesunds and their task wasn’t made easy with three strikers missing in action.
Ailton pulled out of training with an injury on Wednesday while Esteban Solari was already out nursing a back injury. Youngster Marcos Charalambous – who made his debut in the second half against Senica – was also absent on national service duty.
That left Paraguayan midfield-attacker Aldo Adorno, who had not started in seven months, as the only viable option up front while new signings Stathis Aloneftis and Mario Budimir remained on the pitch due to match-fitness.
Things went from bad to worse when Kjetil Rekdal’s side scored first with their first attack of the game. Helio Pinto was dispossessed in midfield on 16 minutes and the visitors quickly broke with Fredrik Ulvestad feeding Tremaine Stewart and the Jamaican winger lashed a precise strike past Dionysis Chiotis from outside the area.
APOEL, who dominated possession and chances throughout the contest despite lacking the firepower upfront, were soon on level terms courtesy of Mario Sergio’s clever freekick soon after.
A similar pattern evolved after the break with the Norwegians putting eight men behind the ball but their resolve finally broke ten minutes from time when Selim Benachour found substitute Aloneftis and the Cypriot international made up for an earlier miss from a similar position to calmly place his shot beyond keeper Sten Grytebust. Both Mario Sergio and Aloneftis registered their first goals for the club.
In Georgia, Anorthosis had to withstand a barrage of vicious tackling but still walked away with a win against hosts Dila Gori.
Dila – who went a man down on 57 minutes following a red card for Gogita Gogua – had their hopes dashed on 69 minutes after veteran striker Yiannis Okkas was on hand to header Juliano Spadacio’s corner.
