British Cypriot pop star George Michael is to perform at the Closing Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games on Sunday (12 August).

Michael has just confirmed the rumors that he will take part in the ceremony, which sees the extinguishing of the Olympic flame, on Twitter.

He told Twitter followers: ‘Spending most of the next week rehearsing like crazy for the Olympic Closing Ceremony.’

He added on Twitter: ‘Obviously a bit nervous not having played for nearly a year, but rehearsals sounding great so far.’

And he nodded to the fact that rumors about his possible performance have been circulating in the media for weeks, saying: ‘I think you all need to be put out of your misery.’

The ceremony is set to include a cast of 4,100, including circus performers, 3,500 adult volunteers and 380 schoolchildren. London landmarks like Big Ben, Tower Bridge, the London Eye and Gherkin are rumored to figure in the show along with references to British literature and art.

The ceremony will start at 9pm UK time on Sunday and will handover to the host city for the 2016 Summer Olympics, Rio de Janeiro
