Turkish Cypriot daily Gunes newspaper (30.08.12) reports that Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu has reiterated the allegation that the “sun rises everyday over two peoples, two cultures, two religions and two sovereign states” in Cyprus.
In a message he issued yesterday on the occasion of 30 August, Turkey’s national day, Eroglu claimed that the Greek Cypriots “are intransigent”, do not want a solution and peace on the island, consider themselves to be the sole ruler of Cyprus having the “obsession” of “enosis” (unification with Greece) and dream of returning to the pre-1974 period.
Referring to Mustafa Kemal Ataturk’s words regarding sovereignty and freedom, Eroglu argued that “big and powerful” Turkey is the “only guarantor of the independence and sovereignty” of the Turkish Cypriot “people”.
