Famagusta District Court on Friday sentenced an employer to three months behind bars and imposed a fine on him for failing to pay due wages to staff in violation of the salaries protection law.
An announcement by the Labour Relations Department of the Labour Ministry said the court also issued an order to pay the salaries.
The department said it will continue to prosecute employers and companies who violate the law and proceed with arbitrary salary cuts or fail to pay due salaries to their staff.
It added that the number of employers not paying the due salaries to their personnel is on the increase and is becoming a cause for concern.
In the first half of 2012, the department carried out 4,397 checks for the implementation of the labour law.
So far, 378 cases went to court in connection with the violation of various laws and fines amounting to €104,000 were imposed.
The salaries’ protection law provides for the obligatory payment of salaries to employees on a regular and systematic basis, weekly or monthly, and does not permit any arbitrary decreases.
