Two Cypriots – a young man and a heavily pregnant woman. remain enclaved in Syria because of the turmoil in the country.
The two had travelled to Syria in mid July to visit relatives, despite a travel warning issued by the Foreign Ministry last March and repeated last week to avoid travel there.
The young man is in Aleppo and the woman some 25 kilometres from the Turkish border.
Speaking to CyBC radio, Antonis Theocharous, head of the Foreign Ministry’s Crisis Management Centre said Cypriot authorities in cooperation with the EU were exploring ways to bring the two home.
He nevertheless advised the two remain where they are at the moment, adding that people planning to travel to Syria were urged to avoid doing so.
