Barnet Police have issued a warning to the borough’s elderly after two people were caught out by the same scam in the space of just one day.
The police would like anyone with elderly relatives, friends or neighbours to warn them about that a scam is being carried out.

On Saturday two people, including an 80-year-old man from Mill Hill, were hit by fraudsters.

The Mill Hill man had £850 taken from his bank account.

The scam involves people phoning an individual claiming to be from their bank.

They state that they are from the fraud department and that your bank account is being used by criminals.

They then give you a phone number to ring to confirm they are genuinely from the bank.

However, this number is answered by an accomplice who will ask for your PIN number and will arrange to collect your card.

Once they have your card and PIN they will empty your bank account.

In a statement Barnet Police said: “No one should ever disclose their PIN number over the phone. A genuine bank will never ask for such information.

“Nor will a genuine bank ever arrange to collect your debit card in such a manner.”
