AEL will not be playing in the UEFA Champions League after winning the first leg 2-1 they lost to Anderlecht who scored two goals in the last nine minutes to beat them 2-0, so the Belgians win, 3-2 on aggregate to go into the group stages. The Belgian champions had lost in the Champions League qualifying ties in the last four summers so it was a great relief for them.
Dieudonne Mbokani evened the Anderlecht-AEL series with nine minutes to play, but the Belgian champion’s still held the advantage on the away goal but Anderlecht substitute Olexandr Yakovenko scored with one minute to go to send Anderlecht to the Champions League for the first time since the 2006-07 season.
AEL’s Rui Miguel had missed the best chance of the first half for the Cypriots when his shot from close range was blocked by goalkeeper Silvo Proto.
The Limassol club will now take part in the Europa League and could be joined by APOEL if they beat or secure a 0-0 draw against Neftchi Baku tonight Thursday night.
