Police in Cyprus have tightened security measures following a recent influx of holidaying Israelis to the island.
Two cruise ships from Israel have already docked in Larnaca and local police have doubled security checks and guards. Security has also been heightened at the island’s two main airports in Larnaca and Paphos as well as the port of Limassol.
A man arrested earlier this month is being held on suspicion of helping to plan attacks against Israeli tourists in Cyprus. The suspect displayed similar behavioral patterns to a suicide bomber who killed six in a Bulgarian seaside resort, Justice Minister Loucas Louca said last week, but stopped short of drawing any links between the two. The 24-year-old Palestinian-Lebanese man – who holds a Swedish passport – will face terrorism charges at the Criminal Court with his trial set to get underway in September.
Media reports in Cyprus said this week that police were bracing for a possible terror attack on Israeli visitors on the island and that a man was taken in for questioning in Paphos this weekend. He was released shortly afterwards without being charged added the same reports.
