The Greek Olympic team began its first day of competition on July 28 at the London 2012 Games with swimmers, rowers, bicyclists, gymnasts, and volleyball players in action.

Greece was disappointed when Ioannis Drymonakos, making his comeback after eight years since his last games, failed to make the final at the men’s 400-meter freestyle swimming competition. Drymonakos was a long shot as his 4:14 time in the European Championship in Debrecen rated him as finishing 18th. Kristel Vourna reached the semi-finals of the 100-meter women’s butterfly race, with a time of 58:74, gaining the 16th and last spot.

Ioannis Tamouridis was the first Greek to compete in the men’s cycling road race, his first participation in such a big sports event. Panagiotis Samilidis, a competitor in the men’s 100 breaststroke, made the 28th spot in best time compared to the other participants.

Greece’s only swimming relay team was represented in the 4-by-100 meter race by Nora Drakou, Theodora Giareni, Neri Niagaura and Kristel Vourna, but their times showed they were unlikely to qualify.
