The Socialist Movement EDEK decided today to support the independent candidacy of former Foreign Minister Giorgos Lillikas, in his bid in next year’s presidential elections.

EDK Central Committee approved a proposal by the party Political Bureau to back Lilikas, by an overwhelming majority of 90 votes in favour, 4 against and 9 abstentions.

“We believe that George Lilikas adequately meets the requirements set for a presidential candidate” EDEK President Yiannakis Omirou said, explaining that Lilikas’ positions on the Cyprus issue, on the necessary reforms of the political system, the economy and society are similar to those maintained by EDEK.

Omirou added the Lilikas has a positive relation with society, which will be enhanced with EDEK’s support, creating the conditions necessary to lead him to an electoral victory.

Commenting on today’s decision, Lilikas thanked the socialist movement, saying that EDEK has proved that it places the country’s interests above party considerations.

“EDEK’s decision increases my responsibilities and obligations” Lilikas notes.
