The Limassol district court on Monday agreed to a police request and ordered a 24-year-old Lebanese man to remain in police custody for another seven days.
The man, arrested on suspicion of planning a terrorist attack earlier this month, was taken to court under tight security,
Police believe that the man was acting by himself. Police spokesman Andreas Angelides said this weekend that investigators have so far found nothing to indicate the 24-year-old man had any accomplices. Adding: “What I can say is that because of the seriousness of this case, we will not give any further details on specific aspects of the case.”
The police have said that the suspect was arrested following a tip from foreign intelligence agencies.
CyBC said the man — a Lebanese national with a Swedish passport — is allegedly linked to Lebanon’s Hezbollah and that he was monitoring Israeli tourists on the island.
Officials have said there is no evidence to link the man to last week’s suicide bombing in Bulgaria that killed five Israeli tourists and a local bus driver. But security has been beefed up across the island to protect Israeli interests.
