Cypriot athletes who are going to compete in the London Olympics to begin July 27 are gathering in the British capital while the delegation from the Cyprus Olympic Committee is doing its best for their accommodation and stay in the city until the end of the games on August 12.
On Monday the first athletes and their guides arrived in London and have already checked in their lodgings.
Five athletes, swimmer Anna Stylianou, gymnast Chrystalleni Trikomitou, tennis player Marcos Baghdatis and sailors Andreas Kariolou and Pavlos Kontides have already arrived in London whereas today the shooters George Achilleos, Antonis Andreou and Panagiota Andreou are due to fly in.
The Director of the Cyprus Olympic Committee Olga Piperides told CNA that the track athletes Constantinos Stathelakos, Kyriakos Ioannou, Apostolos Parellis and Eleni Artimata as well as biker Marios Athanasiades will arrive the first week of August.
She said that the Committee delegation is in daily contact with all the coaches, there is a perfect cooperation and coordination in order for the Cyprus Olympic team to perform its best.
The President of the Committee Ouranios IoannidesĀ arrived in London yesterday and in statements to CNA he said that the Committee is supporting the athletes, expressing the hope that they will reach their goals and win Olympic medals for Cyprus.
President of the Republic Demetris Christofias is expected to visit the Cypriot athletes next Saturday, July 28.
On Sunday the President will inaugurate a photo exhibition at the Hellenic Centre, organized in the framework of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU.
On Monday , an event is co-organized by the Cypriot Centre in London and the Cyprus Olympic Committee.
Cyprus, an EU member since 2004, has assumed the Presidency of the Council of the EU on July 1st for a period of six months.
