Left-wing ruling party AKEL has approved by majority a proposal put forward by the party`s Central Committee, to support Health Minister Stavros Malas` candidacy at the presidential elections that will take place in February 2013.
The decision was taken at an extraordinary congress of the party which took place on Saturday.
Malas` candidacy secured 1183 votes or 92,3% . Eighty one people (6,3%) voted against it, while there were 17 abstentions (1,3%).
Speaking at the conference, AKEL General Secretary Andros Kyprianou said that Malas represents a reliable and democratic choice for every progressive citizen.
He also said that Malas is a proficient scientist and a politician who has proven his ability to promote reforms for the good of the citizens.
In his statements, Malas said that he is ready to lead an effort for a social and political alliance with other political forces in order to address the social, political and economic problems of the country.
Presidential elections take place every five years.
Incumbent President Demetris Christofias has announced that he will not seek reelection.
As things stand at present three other candidates have been announced – the main opposition right wing Democratic Party leader Nicos Anastasiades and former foreign minister George Lillikas.
