A FIRE in Fasouri forest in Limassol, home to most of the island’s Eucalyptus tree species, was almost under control by last night though at least 20 hectares of forestland were lost.

The fire started after 5pm under unknown circumstances, it was fought by two helicopters belonging to the British Sovereign Base Areas (SBA) which had to land when it got dark, an SBA spokesman told the Cyprus Mail.

Eight fire trucks took over at night, by which time 20 hectares (one hectare is 10,000 square metres) were lost, the spokesman said.

“The fire is away from built-up areas,” the spokesman said adding they were not worried that it could pose a threat to people.
