After a promising start to Round 3 of the MSA British Rally Championship, the Pirelli International Rally, eighteen year old Alex Parpottas became the latest victim to Kielder Forests’ infamous ditches when a small off put a sudden halt to his progress.

Whilst trying to avoid a rock on the ‘racing line’, the Buzz Sweets backed Ford Fiesta R2 driver went off the road on Special Stage five. Despite having very little damage to his AVS Motorsport run car, a lack of man power to lift the car back on the road resulted in the University of Hertfordshire student being unable to continue – a disappointing end to the youngsters event.

Before this however, Alex highlighted his progression in the International series, open exclusively to two wheel drive machinery for the first time in 2012, setting times that would match and place him ahead of more experienced International crews over the early stages of the event. With a number of the top crews on the event succumbing to the reputation of ‘Killer Kielder’, Alex was pleased to find himself within the top fifteen at such an early stage on the event;

“The Friday night stages gave me a lot of confidence going into the Saturday leg” commented a disappointed Alex, “The off was one of those things, trying to avoid a rock in a rut we got sucked in – I’m really encouraged by the pace which will help as we get to Scotland for the Jim Clark rally”

Alex now has a months break before beginning to prepare for one of the toughest tarmac events the UK Rally scene has to offer – the Jim Clark Memorial Rally. Based in Duns on the Scottish Borders, the event will mark Alexs’ first event on tarmac his Fiesta R2, a challenge he is already relishing;

“The Jim Clark has a cult following in the UK as far as tarmac events go. With it being the only closed road tarmac event in the country, it’s popularity with the locals is amazing – the stages of course give competitors a real challenge – I can’t wait to get there now”
