The UN aim at clinching an agreement between the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot sides on the core issues of the Cyprus problem, at a meeting, later this month, with the UN Secretary General, his Cyprus envoy Alexander Downer said here today.

Speaking after today’s meeting with Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu, Downer said that if no agreement is achieved then there will be a complete deadlock and the Secretary General will have to think about the next steps and discuss that with the leaders.

Donwer noted during today’s meeting, the leaders focused their discussion “on Green Tree 2, the progress that’s been made since Green Tree 1 and the expectations the United Nations has for Green Tree 2 and the work that needs to be done between now and Green Tree 2 and at the end of Green Tree 2.”

He said there is a lot of work to be done until the second meeting in Green Tree. The leaders will be meeting again on Monday. “Then we will be having further meetings with the two sides during the course of next week as well. It is going to be a very busy couple of weeks ahead of us and we are very much looking forward to it,” Donwer noted.
