Panionios scored a major upset in the Greek Cup on Wednesday by eliminating giants Panathinaikos in the penalty shootout. It has joined Asteras Tripolis, Kerkyra and Olympiakos in the quarterfinals of the competition.
The knockout match at Nea Smyrni was very entertaining but not one goal was scored during the 90 minutes of regular time and half-hour of extra time.
In the shootout, Sebastian Leto, the league’s top scorer, had a chance to seal qualification for Panathinaikos but his attempt was saved by Panionios keeper Yiannis Siderakis, with Mattias Bjaersmyr hitting the crossbar later to secure Panionios a 4-3 victory on penalties.
Olympiakos had no problems against second-division Thrasyvoulos Fylis and won 3-0 thanks to two goals by Marko Pantelic and one by David Fuster. However, Pantelic had to be taken off due to injury in the second half after a clumsy challenge by Nikos Vassiliou. Pantelic will stay out of action for at least a couple of weeks.
Asteras Tripolis scored an emphatic 4-1 win at PAS Giannina, with all goals coming in the last half-hour of the game. Rayo scored twice for Asteras who also had Savvas Tsambouris and Juli on target. Fotis Georgiou pulled one back for the Epirus club.
Finally, Kerkyra eliminated visiting Doxa Dramas with a 2-0 win on Corfu via goals by Gustavo Veronesi and Thanasis Tsigas
