There was chaos at Larnaca Airport Thursday when an employee’s absence during a work-to-rule brought all flights to a halt.
A civil servant working as a liaison in the control tower became ill and went home at around 3pm. Another member of staff was meant to be on duty as well but was absent. Because of the work-to-rule no one was available to take over.
This resulted in the cancellation of 13 flights until a scheduled shift change at 7pm.
The chaos brought condemnation from Cyprus Airways and the airport operator, while hoteliers called for government moves to stop industrial action in essential services.
