Enfield Cypriot sentenced for knife-point rape of 31-year-old woman

On Thursday 10 November 2011 the 31-year-old victim was on her way home from work when she got off a bus in N9. She was walking along a footpath that runs behind houses on Tranmere Road, N9 when she was confronted by the attacker wearing a bandana over his face. He had stepped out into her path from his garden which backed onto Tranmere Road. He threatened the victim with a knife and forced her into a garage adjoined to his property.

Once inside she was raped at knife point. He then forced the victim back out into the alleyway from where she made her way to a friend’s house and immediately alerted police.

Detectives quickly identified the scene and with the assistance of members of the public Cezmi was arrested on suspicion of rape at approximately 00:00hrs that night. He was charged with the above counts on 11 November 2011 and was remanded in custody.

Today, Monday 16 January, Aliriza Cezmi (8/11/92 – 19ys) of Tranmere Road, N9, appeared at Wood Green Crown Court and received an indeterminate sentence for public protection with a minimum of six years before he will be considered for parole. He will also be on the sex offenders register for life and will be deported back to Cyprus on completion of his sentence.

He previously appeared at Wood Green Crown Court on 12 December 2011 and pleaded guilty to four counts of rape and one count of possession of an offensive weapon.

Detective Constable Simon Chapman of the Sapphire Command said: “This was a most callous and violent attack on a vulnerable female. I hope knowing that her attacker is now behind bars will go some way towards allowing the victim to come to terms with what has happened to her and allow her to go on to have a fulfilling future.

“We encourage victims of sexual assault to have the confidence to come forward to police as soon as possible.
