.
AROUND 40 dead sheep, which washed up on an Ayia Napa shore yesterday and the day before, have been collected and destroyed by the veterinary services.
The sheep washed up along the stretch starting from Ayia Thekla in Sotira to Cape Greco.
Larnaca Press was told that the state’s services decontaminated the area and are investigating the incident.
It is believed almost certainly that the sheep were part of a passing ship’s cargo.
It was yesterday reported that it had happened before on the British Bases’ Akrotiri beach in Limassol, where six dead ship were found.
Famagusta police spokesman Yiannos Kapnoulas yesterday said: “According to the Port and Marine Police, the sheep were possibly thrown into the sea by a ship that was transporting animals. Due to turbulent seas in the past few days, many of the sheep seem to have been crushed.”
The Veterinary Services has decontaminated the area where the sheep were found and are testing the sheep to ensure they are not diseased.
The authorities, meanwhile, are checking ship movements to find out who may have dumped the animals into the sea.
