There was serious damage to property in Latchi and Polis Chrysochou in the Paphos district early on Sunday when the Petradi river flooded following heavy rain and strong winds overnight. Polis mayor Angelos Odysseos said the area had not seen such extreme weather for 50 years.
Water flooded out restaurants, shops and basements. Residents said the mud and water had caused many thousands of euros in damage. Officials said more rain was expected on Sunday night, but that the weather would improve significantly on Monday.
More snow is expected on Monday night in the Troodos Mountains, with further rains expected later in the week, with snow at a lower altitude. Earlier on Sunday, roads to Troodos were closed for several hours because of the snow but were later opened to vehicles with snow chains and cars with four wheel drive, allowing hundreds to enjoy the day in the mountains.
