Cyprus was among several issues discussed last Saturday between UNSG Ban Ki Moon and Foreign Minister of Turkey Ahmet Davutoglu, during their meeting in Beirut.

According to an official announcement posted on the UN webpage, dated January 14th, the two men met in Lebanon where the Secretary-General was on an official visit during the weekend. They also discussed the situation in Syria, as well as Iran, it notes.

The said announcement refers to the death of former Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash who passed away last Friday night, at the age of 88, in a hospital in the northern Turkish occupied part of Cyprus after serious health problems.

The Secretary-General, his Special Adviser on Cyprus, Alexander Downer, and his Special Representative for Cyprus, Lisa Buttenheim, expressed their condolences to Denktash’ family as well as to all Turkish Cypriots, Ban`s spokesperson said in a statement on Saturday
