Ivan Jovanovic’s stern warning to his players to brush up their act following their shock 2-1 defeat to Alki last weekend seemed to a strike a nerve as his side mauled Akritas Chlorakas 9-1 in the Cyprus Coca-Cola Cup on Wednesday night.
In the other Cup game, AEK Larnaca edged Halkanoras 1-0 in Dhali courtesy of Gregor van Dijk’s late penalty.
Champions APOEL had no such problems getting their win as they unleashed their frustration on second division outfits Akritas Chlorakas.
The game also saw a return to the starting frame for William Boaventura and Greek keeper Dionysis Chiotis.
Gustavo Manduca put his side ahead with a header on six minutes and the Brazilian grabbed his second eight minutes later after being teed up Aldo Adorno.
Provider then turned scorer as the Paraguayan – who may be naturalised to play for Cyprus next year – made it 3-0 on 19 minutes and Ivan Trickovski added a fourth just after halftime.
Brazilian midfielder Marcinho made it 5-0 with an impressive solo effort before Nuno Morais got himself onto the scoresheet with a powerful drive.
A mix-up in the Akritas defence allowed Adorno to make it seven before Boaventura marked his return from a long injury layoff by sealing number eight.
Ivan Gomez scored a consolation goal in the dying minutes for the Paphos club but APOEL were to have the last word as Adorno notched up his hat-trick in injury time to complete a 9-1 rout.
APOEL, who are third in the league, will next take on Olympiakos Nicosia in the league in the championship while first place Omonia take on second place AEL.
