The Cyprus Football Association (CFA) have announced that they have linked up with Europe’s governing body for football (UEFA) to investigate reports that some of this week’s Cyprus Coca-Cola games were fixed.
One of the games under investigation – Wednesday’s first round encounter between Olympiakos Nicosia and Doxa Katokopia – saw the betting volume go through the roof with betting suspended by one internet betting company when it reached a stunning €662,000. The average volume for such games is around €30,000.
There were also suspicions for the game between Ayia Napa and Nea Salamina with the same betting company again stopping the intake of any more bets pre-game when the volume hit €113,000.
“The CFA in response to various media publications today would like to inform the football community that an investigation has been launched in cooperation with the relative departments of UEFA”, read an announcement by the island’s ruling body for football. “It has been observed that the betting volume of several games was disproportionately high.”
Olympiakos, who trailed second division Doxa 2-0 at halftime, rallied back in the second half to win 3-2 and it is believed that thousands of euros had been bet for a correct score of 3-2.
In the other game, Nea Salamina also bounced back from 2-0 against second division opponents Ayia Napa to win 4-2.
