President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias has assured that “we will continue with all our might to work in the direction of a solution, for the liberation and reunification of our homeland and people, to create a new hopeful prospect, to achieve a solution of a bizonal bicommunal federation.“ Speaking at the presentation of a book by journalist Costas Yenaris, President Christofias said that the Greek Cypriot side`s approach was that “division is a disaster for our homeland and people.“ He added that “both at the negotiating table and with the continuous initiatives we undertake, we have proven beyond any doubt our determination and willingness to reach a solution the soonest possible.“ “This cannot be questioned by anyone. If we do not reach a solution in the near future, this will be exclusively due to the negative stance of the Turkish Cypriot side and Turkey,“ he pointed out. Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. The two sides are currently engaged in UN-led negotiations with an aim to reunify the island.
