A CHESHUNT man has been slapped with an £80 fine for buying alcohol for teenagers in the town. The 22-year-old was seen buying the alcohol by three plain clothed Special Constables who were on patrol on Friday. He bought the alcohol for a group of young people who were waiting outside an off licence in Church Lane, one of whom was a 14-year-old girl. He was stopped and asked to account for his actions when he admitted the offence.

He was given a fixed penalty notice which incurs an £80 fine. Police Licensing Officer John Ivens said: “Not only will the man be required to pay an £80 fine, he will also have a criminal record. “I would remind people that it is an offence to buy alcohol on behalf of anyone aged under 18 and I implore people to think carefully before taking such action.

“Special Constables and other officers actively patrol in plain clothes in the borough so it is likely you will be under observation.” Special Constables are volunteers who have the same powers and uniform as regular police officers. To join, you must be aged at least 18, be in general good health and be willing to spare at least 16 hours a month. We are especially keen to recruit Special Constables from visible ethnic minority groups to reflect the diverse communities within Hertfordshire.
