There will be no service on the Athens metro from 5 a.m. on Thursday until 5 a.m. on Saturday after staff decided to go ahead with a 48-hour strike to protest an attack on the head of their union, Antonis Stamatopoulos, and a colleague on Monday outside the Piraeus electric railway station.

The attack occurred after an apparent falling out between metro workers and representatives of the union for employees of the Athens-Piraeus electric railway (ISAP).

In a related development, the section of the ISAP route between Omonia and Tavros stations will be suspended on Friday through Sunday as renovation work gets underway. The route is scheduled to resume normal service on Monday. Commuters will be able to use a replacement bus service – route number 011 – between Friday and Sunday
