Civil servants union Pasydy are recommending that their members strike for 12 hours Thursday in protest at the government’s austerity plan.
The work stoppage must be ratified by the union’s general committee on Tuesday.
It is intended to coincide with Finance Minister Kikis Kazamias’s presentation of the plan to the House.
He held urgent talks with union leaders in an attempt to prevent strike action.
Kazamias has said that working people should not be required to make any new sacrifices, further than those agreed between the government and political parties on Friday.
Earlier, President Christofias appealed to trade unions to avoid strike action and pledged to continue dialogue with them.
President Christofias said he had heard a warning from a leader of a semi government trade union that a strike was the only measure that could be taken. “I do not think this is the best option and I am being as mild as possible. Of course it is the right of unions to declare strikes. The question is where we are heading. What will be the impact on the whole effort to balance things,” he said.
Christofias said he agreed with the unions there should have been more dialogue but added that the situation was urgent and had obliged the government to move quickly.
