The UN Secretary General`s Special Adviser on Cyprus Alexander Downer will be briefing the members of the UN Security Council on Friday on the outcome of the Greentree meeting between the UN Secretary General and the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus.
The briefing will begin at 1000 local time, behind closed doors, and will be presided over by Portugal`s Permanent Representative.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. The leaders of the two communities are currently engaged in UN-led negotiations with an aim to reunify the island. They met on October 30-31, 2011 at Greentree, Long Island, with the UN Secretary General. The two-day meeting was the forth meeting with the Secretary-General.
The UNSG said after the conclusion of the meeting that the leaders assured him that they can finalize a deal, acknowledging that there is still work to be done.
