The Greens were again in cup action this time away at Red Division Edmonton Rangers in the second round of the Challenge Cup. On a foggy morning it was again to be a tough test against the current red division champions. Omonia changed their formation and tried a 4-4-2 line up with Demetris up front with Nick P. In the first 10-15 minutes, Edmonton had a couple of guilt edge chances that you would expect to be put away. However, given they were squandered, Omonia grew in belief, competed and deservedly took a lead when good midfield play released Nick P to streak through and the slam the ball beyond the keeper.
The greens extended their lead shortly afterwards with Nick once again escaping their Edmonton backline and finishing confidently. It was a fantastic first half as numerous chances were created for Nick P, Demetris and Theo. In truth the lead should have been extended by another couple of goals to signify the Greens dominance. Our Achilles heel was to catch us out just before the break when another poor goal was conceded to leave the score 2-1.
The second half was much more evenly contested with chances at both ends, great keeping from Zak, goal line challenges and clearances from Terry, John, Kerry and Luke. Theo went close at the other end as did Andrew with a flashing header just over and a fantastic volley from Demetris that struck the bar with the keeper beaten. From an Edmonton corner which Zac managed to get to the edge of the area, Edmonton drew level with an overhead kick that went in off the post. A very good goal that was hard to defend. Edmonton then wasted a fantastic chance to go ahead when they screwed a chance over the bar when it was easier to score. Omonia when then handed a lifeline when the referee spotted a handball inside the Edmonton area and up stepped Terry to blast the away team ahead with 5 minutes left.
The belief and teamwork within the team then ensured that the score line was preserved and a fantastic win was achieved against higher ranked opponents.
