A MUM, threatened with prosecution and a £1,000 fine over her ill son’s ‘truancy’, has spoken of her “massive relief” after proceedings against her were dropped.
Karen Reid, of Potters Bar, was slapped with a £50 fixed penalty notice after the county council deemed her 13-year-old son to have been playing truant from Mount Grace School.
Ms Reid said her son Brandon was off because he suffers with severe nosebleeds and blood clots which he has to spit out.
She also said he was absent from the Church Road school because he was suffering from sickness and diarrhoea on some occasions.
But the county council sent Ms Reid a letter warning that she could face a fine of up to £1,000 for non-payment of the fixed penalty notice.
However, this week Ms Reid said the “stressful” episode was finally behind her, as the school and council had relented and torn up the fine.
She said “They said they looked at his attendance since September, which had been 100 per cent.
“I am sure it’s more to do with having had a meeting with [Mount Grace headteacher] Mr Baker finally.
“I addressed the problems my son had and he was rather sympathetic.”
SShe said the saga had left her “angry” because Brandon “had valid reasons” [for his absence].
A spokesman for Hertfordshire County Council said: “The fine has been withdrawn because her son’s attendance has improved dramatically.”
