Two live hand grenades were found outside the home of a prison warden in the capital on Tuesday, prompting the police bomb disposal squad to shut down the road and defuse the explosives.
According to police spokesman Michalis Katsounotos, two unidentified men on a high-powered motorcycle were spotted leaving the hand grenades by the warden’s car outside his house Ayios Dometios at around 11.30pm. Members of the bomb disposal unit cordoned of the area and managed to defuse the explosives without them detonating.
Katsounotos added that the grenades appear to be Turkish while the intended target is a high raking warden at the Nicosia Central Prison.
Police are investigating the crime.
