OMIROU – BRUSSELSPresident of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus Yiannakis Omirou appeared satisfied on Tuesday with his meetings so far in Brussels.
On Tuesday, the second day of his trip, Omirou held meetings with the heads of all the political groups in the European Parliament, whom he briefed on the Cyprus problem and Turkey`s intransigent stance, Turkish threats against Cyprus regarding explorations for natural gas in its exclusive economic zone, and preparations for Cyprus` EU presidency in the second half of 2012.
Omirou said there was an increasing understanding of the dangers from Turkey`s behaviour against Cyprus, and the destabilising role it is playing in the broader region, adding that he noted the lack of progress in talks to solve the Cyprus problem.
Referring to Turkish threats concerning explorations for natural gas, Omirou pointed out that “they are not just threats, they are acts of war by sending the navy and military jets.“ He added that “the condemnation is total and collective, and it is a position all the political groups have expressed.“
