THE Olympic torch will be blazing a trail through Barnet and Enfield next summer when it is carried across the streets of the borough two days before the opening ceremony of the Games.
The torch is scheduled to travel from Brent on Wednesday July 25 before passing the town hall and then through a number of town centres and parks before including Barnet and Enfield.
About 30 torchbearers will have an opportunity to carry the flame as it makes its journey through the boroughs.
The boroughs are two of more than 1,000 villages, towns, cities and London boroughs through which torchbearers will carry the Olympic flame during a 70-day relay.
On the final day of its journey on July 27, the torch will be transported along the River Thames to the Olympic Stadium in Stratford and will be used to light the cauldron at the opening ceremony, signifying the official start of the Games.
Lord Sebastian Coe, chairman of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, said: “We are thrilled to confirm that Barnet and Enfield will act as host locations for the Olympic flame on July 25.
“This is the United Kingdom’s moment to shine and I want to encourage people across Barnet and Enfield to start planning how they can be part of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”
Torchbearers will be confirmed from February next year. They will be chosen based on their
personal achievements and their contributions to the community.
The street-by-street route of the Olympic flame will be announced next year. To view the interactive map, see www.london2012.com/olympic
