An estimated €126m is owed in unpaid fines, the House Finance Committee heard on Monday, during a discussion of the police force’s budget for 2012.
Green Party deputy George Perdikis accused the police of turning a blind eye and called on the leadership to take disciplinary action against officers who fail to lay down the law.
Police Chief Michalis Papageorgiou said several suggestions had been made to remedy the problem but none had been accepted.
Permanent Secretary of the Justice Ministry Petros Kareklas said the authorities were examining a suggestion which prevent motorists with outstanding fines renewing their road tax.
He added that the matter would need to be discussed with the Attorney General to ensure it did not violate drivers’ rights.
