George, 48, performed Elton’s song Idol, telling the audience including Kylie Minogue: “It’s a song he wrote in the late 70s and it’s about an ageing pop star. Funny that.”

The pair fell out in 2004 after Elton, 64, said the ex-Wham! star was in a “strange place”. But they made up at the Rocket Man’s White Tie and Tiara Ball in June this year.

And last night George proved his old pal could have Faith in their friendship by doing his bit for his Aids Foundation and its new Elizabeth Taylor Memorial Fund.

The gig at London’s Royal Opera House was part of George’s 47-date European tour.
