Former Commerce and Industry Minister Yiorgos Lillikas is being sued by the state for a decision taken when he was a member of the government of Tassos Papadopoulos, Phileleftheros newspaper reported on Thursday.
For the first time in the history of the Republic of Cyprus, the attorney general is taking legal action against a former minister, asking him to take personal, civil responsibility and pay any compensation (€1.8m) should the court rule against the state in a suit brought by the Cyprus Cattle Breeders Association.
The paper notes that the decision had been ratified by cabinet in 2004.
The Cattle Breeders sued the state in 2009 asking for the help promised by cabinet and the legal service of the republic has named Lillikas as a party to the case on the grounds that he exceeded his authority
